The escalation of tension between Ryanair and the Municipality of Naples worries ASSOMALTA. The increase in airport taxes risks damaging vital connections for tourism, business and students between Malta and Campania.

The Maltese-Italian Trade Association, ASSOMALTA, expresses its deep concern about the escalation of tension between Ryanair and the Municipality of Naples over the increase in airport taxes.

“We are concerned about the negative impact this clash will have on air connections and tourism between Malta and Campania,” said ASSOMALTA President, Avv. Stefano Colombetti. “Over the past two years, we have witnessed a significant growth in passenger numbers and trade between the two regions. The increase in airport taxes by the City of Naples, coupled with Ryanair’s threat to cut flights, threatens to nullify this progress and seriously damage our economies.”

ASSOMALTA emphasises that air links between Malta and Naples are vital for:

  • Tourism: thousands of tourists travel between the two regions every year to enjoy their natural, artistic and cultural beauty.
  • Business: trade relations between Malta and Campania are growing strongly, with an increasing number of companies operating in the two territories.
  • Students: Both Campania and Malta attract large numbers of students from both countries every year.

The increase in airport taxes will make flights to and from Naples less competitive, with a negative impact on passenger numbers and consequently on the economies of Malta and Campania.

ASSOMALTA urges the parties involved to find a quick and constructive solution that takes into account the needs of all stakeholders.

“An open and constructive dialogue is the only way to prevent this clash from having negative consequences for the citizens, businesses and economies of Malta and Campania,” added Sergio Passariello, Secretary General of Assomalta.

ASSOMALTA is willing to work with all stakeholders to find a solution to this dispute that is in everyone’s interest.
